As the weather in Northern California warms up, more and more star parties are popping up. One of the most anticipated of the season is the Golden State Star Party that occurs close to Lassen National Volcanic Park, July 10th – 14th.
For those of us who live in or near a city, our sky is heavily polluted by the light that surrounds us. Fortunately, Lassen has some of the “darkest sky” in the world. The Bortle Dark-Sky Scale classifies the amount of light pollution we see and attributes a classification based on the darkest sky (Bortle Class 1) to the most heavily light polluted (Bortle Class 9). Anywhere in Lassen is between Bortle Class 1 and 2. Imagine looking up and clearly seeing the Milky Way stream across the sky and millions of stars clearly visible with the naked eye — it’s a stargazers dream.
Come join me in Lassen as I bring out my two telescopes and meet with other amateur astronomers from across the country for 4 nights of dark sky. Whether you’re a total n00b or experienced astronomer, this will be a great time to meet fellow minded astronomy geeks, gaze through a myriad of impressive telescopes and learn just a bit more about the universe and all its beauty.
